The Mind-Body Connection: How to Maintain Groundedness in a Busy World
Introduction
The mind and the body are naturally connected, but we can also strengthen this connection when it seems that it is not particularly strong. We will learn how to do this, but first, we must explain what the mind-body connection is and how it keeps us grounded in our busy world.
What Is the Mind-Body Connection?
The mind and body are connected, but this shouldn’t be a surprise. What we think, believe and feel affects the way that our bodies function. Therefore, our minds are the reason that we experience particular health outcomes.
It works the other way as well. How we treat our bodies, whether or not we exercise, how much or how little we eat and how we carry ourselves affects us mentally in a positive or negative manner.
Ways to Achieve a Mind-Body Connection?
Mindfulness
Mindfulness is known as a “mind-body practice” because it focuses on the connections between the mind and the body. Practicing mindfulness means that you are living in the moment and that you are not judging anything that comes up in a negative or positive manner.
One example of a mindfulness practice is “muscle relaxation.” In this practice, you will tense and then relax muscle groups that are currently experiencing tension, and this has the effect of releasing this tension.
Breathwork
During breathwork, you may join a class with an instructor leading it. For example, your instructor ensures that you are fully present and focused on your breathing. You will inhale and exhale your breath completely. This has the result of causing you to automatically breathe deeper and more slowly.
Meditation
Meditation teaches you how to be aware of the present moment. It is highly beneficial because it prevents you from reacting to your negative feelings or thoughts. Mindfulness meditation allows you to choose your focal point. For example, you could write a mantra that you want to follow, and the tendency you have to ruminate on negative thoughts decreases.
Sleep
Mindfulness meditation is based on Buddhist practices that make it easier for you to live in the present moment. It reduces your negative thoughts, but it also encourages positive thoughts. For example, mindfulness meditation places you in a more relaxed state so that you are more likely to fall asleep.
Limit Screen Time
Limiting screen time promotes the mind-body connection for several reasons. For example, not engaging with screens before going to bed makes it easier for you to fall asleep. Screens also reduce the amount of REM sleep that you receive. Excessive screen time also leads to headaches and eye strain. Spending less time on screens also reduces neck, back and shoulder pain.
How Psychedelics Can Facilitate a Mind-Body Connection
When human beings are daydreaming, for example, their default mode network takes over. When other areas of the brain become engaged, the activity in the default mode network dampens. If the brain remains in the DMN mode, it leads to negative thinking. By taking psychedelics, you can loosen up the hold that the DMN has on your brain, and other brain regions can become more active, like they are in healthy brains.
What Are Psychedelics?
Psychedelics are drugs that are also known as “hallucinogens.” They include PCP, LSD, peyote and psilocybin. These drugs have the effect of adjusting your thoughts and your feelings.
Are Psychedelics Legal?
Under federal law, psychedelics are illegal. However, you can purchase legal psychedelics in some states. For example, psilocybin is legal in Colorado and Oregon.
Are Psychedelics Addictive?
According to the National Institute of Drug Abuse or NIDA, psychedelics, including psilocybin and LSD, are not addictive.
